Matthew Kim, Saxophone, Clarinet

A passionate musician and teacher, saxophonist/clarinetist Matthew Kim is an active performer in the New England region. Matthew Kim has performed with the UNH Wind Ensemble, UNH Symphonic Band, UNH Jazz Band, UNH Bratton Hall Jazz Band, UNH Orchestra, UNH Saxophone Quartet, Longy’s MAM rep ensemble/MAM avant-garde ensemble, Longy Saxophone quartet, Kenneth Radnofsky’s saxophone ensemble, and has played in various jazz combos in the New Hampshire area.

Matthew Kim was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and grew up in West Boylston Massachusetts, and completed his undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire with a double major in Music Education and Classics.

Matthew has performed in various recitals at the University of New Hampshire. An accomplished clarinetist, Mr. Kim has performed full length clarinet recitals. In 2007, Matthew played alto saxophone with the National Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds.

He has performed with the Worcester County Light Opera Company, the Holy Cross Graduation Band, the Fantasy Big Band located in Hopedale, and has played flute at the After Hours Arts Program in Lynn MA.

Mr. Kim had a great opportunity to work with the late Mr. Dennis Wrenn as a student teacher at Algonquin Regional High School, working with all ensembles, including the music theory classes. Mr. Kim also taught master classes, beginning jazz improv, and served as a counselor/teacher for middle school and high school students at UNH’s Summer Youth Music School. He had the great opportunity to also teach after school private lessons and work at various public schools in Franklin, Hudson, Framingham, Southbridge and various locations near the Worcester area. He has obtained a teacher’s license and is certified as a music educator by the Department of Education in the state of Massachusetts

Mr. Kim has completed his master’s degree in saxophone at the Longy School of Music. Matthew has had the pleasure to study with various teachers, including: Dave Seiler, Jared Sims, Dr. Elizabeth Gunlogson, Stephanie Ratte, and Kenneth Radnofsky. Mr. Kim performed a graduate saxophone recital in the spring of 2011.
